Purpose of the
Job:
To deliver a ‘Pocket Places for People’ project in Derby,
with a focus on the community engagement element of the project.
Dimensions of Job:
Pocket Places for People is a new project, inspired
by low-cost street reclamation projects in New York City. This innovative
project seeks to focus on an urban corridor and support local communities to
reclaim a series of ‘pocket places’ along it, to help re-knit the social and
physical fabric of their area. The pocket places will initially be temporary to
try out ideas, but with a view to more permanent interventions. They might
include placing planters, benches or pop-up street cafes in otherwise isolated
traffic islands or forgotten spaces, or provide facilities to fix a bike or grow
food, etc.
Place in the
Organisation:
The postholder will report to the Regional
Director, (East Midlands), working closely with the Urban Designer, Pocket
Places for People, the DIY Streets Manager, and Local Authority staff.

Key
Responsibilities (not in ranking order):
·
To design and deliver a stakeholder engagement process with the aim of creating
a series of ‘pocket
places’, in a set location within Derby.
·
To
act as lead contact for partnership delivery of the Pocket Places for People
project in Derby. In particular to include all liaison with relation to the
temporary trialling of proposed interventions, including event management and
overseeing installation.
·
To
liaise closely with the Urban Designer, Pocket Places for People, to enable them to develop appropriate design materials to
facilitate stakeholder input into the project, and to ensure appropriate
oversight of technical aspects.
·
To facilitate (or co-facilitate with the Urban Designer, Pocket Places
for People) all stakeholder design workshops.
·
To act as
key contact for all stakeholders, working proactively to engage as many local
people/community groups as possible in the process.
·
To organise and deliver all engagement activities and events, (for
example, but not limited to, consultation workshops, pop-up travel advice
surgeries, and eye catching/unusual events and street parties, with the aim of
increasing or refocusing human activity in the target location).
·
To ensure effective local partnerships are developed and maintained in
order to support wider project objectives.
·
To participate in project meetings with partners, the project steering
group and other stakeholders.
·
To coordinate locally the recruitment, training and delivery of part time
travel advisors, in partnership and with support from other Sustrans teams and
departments. To coordinate and organise pop-up travel advice surgeries within
the target location.

To support national Pocket Places for People project coordination and
management in:
·
overall project management including scheduling and budget management
·
the monitoring, evaluation and reporting of the outcomes and outputs of
the programme
·
the communication and dissemination of DIY Streets, including arrangement
of and/or participation in conferences/seminars
·
wider resource management and project review;
·
To liaise closely with colleagues in the East Midlands region to ensure
integration between Pocket Places for People activities and wider Sustrans policy
and project work.
·
To work with the Sustrans press and publicity team to support the
generation of positive media based upon Pocket Places for People project work
in the East Midlands.
·
To promote the information and incentives that are available through the LSTF
and Better by Bus programmes to local
people and community groups. This may include the
distribution and promotion of information and discounted tickets, bike loans and asking individuals to complete
travel surveys.
·
To promote and contribute to LSTF and Better by Bus events, road shows
and promotional campaigns;
·
To provide support for other Pocket Places for People projects/staff if appropriate
and required.
·
To support and comply with the
organisation’s Policy for the management of Health and Safety.
·
To work in accordance with the
arrangements described in the organisation’s health and safety management
system including any project or department specific requirements.
·
To undertake any other duties appropriate to the
grade, the post and capabilities of the post holder as directed by the
management group or line manager.
Working
Conditions:
The post will be based at Derby City Council. Some
travel, including regular visits to the project area and overnights away
together with work outside normal office hours will be required.
