First Event of 2012

On New Year's Day we have an opportunity to start 2012 with a short ride and an interesting visit to the Victorian Pumping Station at Clay Mills, where the engines will be in steam. We can tour the workshop facilities and there is a cafe on site where we can get hot drinks and food. Meet at Mickleover Station at 10am or join the ride en route via Etwall and Egginton along NCN Route 54.
Whilst in the area we will take a look at recent developments on the new  R54 path alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal at Stretton.

En route please check out the rather neglected and therefore rusty, flaky milepost at the side of the A38 between Eggington & Stretton. Would a new home with a a lick or two of paint be a good idea? Would it be possibly to load it onto a bike trailer? Only half joking!

This milepost has a hard life being close to the high speed traffic on the A38. It is constantly sprayed with water from passing juggernauts and in the winter, lots of salt.
No wonder it has deteriorated quicker than any of our other mileposts.
It was last painted by Alan Locke some years ago.

At the time - As part of an experiment, I painted different posts in different paints. This post was painted entirely with Hammerite, so I doubt that it is in as bad a state as it appears. I had intended to go down there with a wet rag and some good floor cleaner. It should work miracles.
If the post is as bad as suggested it means that Dulux outdoor paint is better than Hammerite as that was used on the post at the junction of the R54/68.

Full marks for the Hammerite. The paint appears to be in excellent condition but is coated in muck sprayed from countless passing juggernauts.
