In the nick of time it seems, today we put fifteen new nest boxes up in the trees between the Pink Bridge and Sutton Lane Bridge on R54 at Etwall, making a total of nineteen boxes.
Picture shows Martin fixing one above vandal height in one of the trees, whilst Mavis puts her full weight (!) on the bottom rung of the ladder to steady it.
Before we left after a couple of hours, three of the boxes had been inspected by the local blue tits, so we are hopeful that there will be plenty of young birds soon to make up for the numbers lost during the past hard winter.
All the boxes have been sponsored by the people of Etwall and so now we will see a return on the cash which we used to purchase the timber.
Next winter we hope to expand the scheme to both Mickleover and to Breadsall, where there are lots of people and lots of trees.
From today's exercise we have learned a lot and will expect to have better boxes, in larger numbers, up in the trees earlier than we have this time.

Bat Boxes. Mickleover area used to have plenty of bats. I wonder if we could attract some back.
Bluetit boxes are in every garden, two in some.
But would Mickleover people sponsor Bat boxes?
Is there an 'ism' word for preference of mammals to the exclusion of birds?
An interesting suggestion.
I would think that most people would prefer tits to bats, but no reason why we could not offer both options. Especially if we knew what a bat box looks like, but it will be on the Internet.
Also we could try a few other variants, such as owl boxes. These are quite large. I have seen a box for sparrows which had two adjacent compartments like a pair of semi-detached houses, since it seems that sparrows like to be close to other sparrows.
