Ride around Leicester, 12th February

Following a recce yesterday I have a clearer idea of the itinerary for next Tuesday's trip to Leicester. I suggest we meet around 10.00 for the 10.20 service - latecomers could go direct to platform 6. Arrival into Leicester is a little before 11am and it will take around 20mins to get to Abbey Park for our late morning coffee/tea. The next leg to Rothley is around 18km and is mostly off road. There is a pub (Red Lion) in Rothley advertising a carvery for £4.75, another one (Rothley Court) offering two meals for £9.95 and finally Ellis cafe at Rothley station where bacon or sausage baps are £3. They are not as big as those at Hilton, however. For the steam enthusiasts (me, anyway) trains pass through Rothley at 13.27 and 14.50. If the weather is truly horrid we could use the 14.50 train to get us back into Leicester, albeit with about 10km still to ride, but I suspect it would not be such good value as the journey from Derby to Leicester. There are a number of routes we could take back from Rothley and I suggest we chose one on the day. We should be back into Derby station by 16.30.

I collected a ticket plus a cycle ticket for the 10.20 a.m train on Tuesday to Leicester so looking forward to the ride and day out. See you at the station at 10.00 a.m.

Many thanks to all who braved the bitter wind and the forced rearrangement of the day caused by a broken rail in the Ambergate area which led to heavy delays. We had an extra train ride to Nottingham and an HST set thence to Leicester. Arrival was so late that we had insufficient time to get comfortably to Rothley and back so we (Mavis and I) had a short ride and then joined the non-cyclists in the Corn Exchange (A Wetherspoon pub). Martin was sent a message via the lady who runs the cafe at Rothley station (and I gather was given a lecture by her as to the necessity these days of having a mobile phone). A different but enjoyable day. I hope all got home OK.

A Brilliant day out in spite of all the hiccups!
Thank you to Peter for organizing and re-organizing as the day went on. Cycled home afterwards and added a very enjoyable 20 miles onto my cycling clock.
