Hedge Laying

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust provided really excellent training in the mysteries of hedge laying at Carr Vale Nature Reserve near Bolsover. Two experts gave detailed explanations and hands on guidance in the delicate mechanics of persuading saplings to bend without snapping. The photo shows the before and after state. 15 of us managed to lay about 20 m of hedging in 4 hours. So it would take several centuries for a typical Rangers' work party to lay hedging along the 10 mile or boundary of the Mickleover - Egginton Greenway. However there are plenty of dark corners for practice, that would be improved by extra daylight. Martin
