Cyclist Killed
Sadly, a cyclist was in collision with a BMW car on the A38 at Stretton this afternoon and the cyclist has died.
This seems to have occured on the South bound carriageway close to the Burton turn onto the A5121.
Locals will know that there is a two-way cycle path on the opposite side of the A38, adjacent to the North bound carriageway, this being part of NCN R6, between Egginton and Burton.
Nearby, work is in hand to construct an off-road path into Burton from the Stretton fly-over, this being the subject of an earlier post.

Very sad indeed. We need more protection from lunatic driver it is sure. However I agree with Les there is a safe and perfectly reliable cycle path on the side of the opposite carriageway. Perhaps this rider was not familiar with the local routes.
You will remember the cyclist that was injured (broken collarbone) as a result of a crash barrier which hung onto the cycle track on the A38. He has just lost his third appeal for damages. Apparently when the crash barrier overlaps the cycleway it is the responsibility of the cyclist to avoid it.
Of course if the crash barrier overhung the A38 and a car ran into it. Oh my gosh perhaps someone would lose their job!
It is time we had the same rights as car drivers.
Not a good day for cyclists, then. An 18 year old potential Olympic cyclist was killed today in Lancashire as a result of a collision with a Transit Van. What a waste!!
To be honest I try to avoid riding when the sun is low, and if I do and I am caught in the wrong position riding into the sun, I will ride on the wrong side of the road where I face the traffic. At least the traffic can see me there.
On Christmas day a friend of my wife wrote her car off by driving into a parked car. Dazzled by the sun.
What chance does a cyli8st stand?
