Those were the Days (20)

Coincident with the construction of the Mickleover Greenway in 2001, was the demolition of the Rolls-Royce Training Centre which stood just north of Mickleover Station and opposite the Great Northern public house.  Prior to it being taken over by RR, it had been a sweet factory.
The land was sold for housing development and is now the Radbourne Gate Estate.
Here is a photograph of the factory just immediately before demolition.

A few days later, the main tower had succumbed to the mighty wrecking ball.
Note the fenced-off conifer. I wonder if it has survived. Must take a look sometime. Perhaps it is somewhere amongst the houses and it would be interesting to see how much it had grown in ten years and to see what now surrounds it.

Thanks for that info, Les. I had no idea this building existed. I led a group from Derby to Lichfield (Shawn Brotherhood was our official photographer) on 21 June 2000 to publicize the opening of 5000 miles of the NCN. We used the road through Radbourne, I think, because the Mickleover Greenway wasn't open then, so I guess we didn't pass this building at all. Shame to see it disappear so ignominiously.
