Those were the Days (13)

The date 10th July 2003, the place Derby's Council House, and the event was the Official Opening Ride on NCN Route 68 The Pennine Cycleway, running 350 miles from Derby to Berwick-upon-Tweed.
Actually none of the people in the picture, (especially the piper hired for the occasion by Sustrans) cycled all the way to Berwick, but we did accompany the main party of 80 as far as Ashbourne.
All pictured were local Sustrans Rangers - left to right Jeremy Taylor, Shawn Brotherhood, Alan Locke, Les Sims, Alan Hunter, Kay Frazer, and Alan Partridge. Sadly Alan Hunter died suddenly a few months later.

After a few miles, with the best part of 100 cyclists behind us, we met an obstruction in the form of contractors trimming the  verges of the Mickleover Greenway.
