5 Parks Ride volunteers needed

The following has been received from Amanda Salt asking for volunteer marshals for the 5 Parks Ride:

Dear Cycle Champion

If we have not already met, I would like to introduce myself as the Derby CTC Cycle Champions Officer. If you volunteered last year, I hope to meet you again. I am pleased to again be organising this year’s 5 Parks Ride in partnership with Cycle Derby, Derby Cycling Group and Sustrans.

This is the fifth year of the 5 Parks Ride in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support Charity. It is a sponsored 6 mile ride, aimed at families, and takes riders around 5 green spaces in Derby.

This year’s 5 Parks Ride (5PR) is part of The Big Cycle Day Out festival, at Markeaton Park.

As an experienced cyclist yourself, I would like to ask you whether you would be willing to come along and volunteer to help support a small group of cyclists around the 5PR route?

Many people need an event like this to get them and their families back on their bikes. Without the support of experienced enthusiastic cyclists such as you, these events would not be possible. Previous participants have said that they have lived in Derby all their lives and never knew the cycle routes existed. This is a perfect opportunity to show them what they have been missing, and inspire them to go and explore new routes, while at the same time raising as much money as they can for Macmillan Cancer Support Charity.

There will be a 5PR setting off every half hour between 11am and approx 2pm on Sunday 4 July from Markeaton Park. Small teams of volunteers are being asked to support one or more of the rides. You will know what time you are supporting a ride, so will not be asked to stay around the whole day - but feel free to do more than one or enjoy the rest of the festival.

No ride leader experience necessary. You just need to be a competent and confident cyclist willing to learn how to guide a group of people on a ride. There will be a briefing meeting, ‘reccy’ ride of the route and ride manager training session held for registered volunteers. This will provide instruction on how to safely lead a group of people on a ride on the road. All volunteers are asked to attend this training and briefing session, it will also give you chance to meet the other volunteers. Refreshments will be provided and volunteers can claim reasonable travel expenses. Date and more information to follow to interested volunteers.

On the day of the ride, volunteers are asked to ‘check in’ at the Macmillan stand, at least 30 minutes before their ride and will receive a voucher for a biking breakfast to fuel you up for the ride.

If every volunteer is involved in 1 ride, we will need at least 18 volunteers.

Go on, be a Cycle Champion and put the dates in your diary now.

To register as a volunteer please send me an email

Kind regards

Amanda Salt
