Pyromaniacs at Large

The only downside of the ground clearance being done by the Community Service Payback Team is that it produces a large amount of tree prunings which would otherwise take years to rot down, so we are burning them on a series of discreet bonfires. Out in the wilds of R54 we have no neighbours to complain and the many passers-by on this cold morning were pleased to warm themselves by the fire.
Picture shows today's effort, which has helped to reduce the ever growing pile, with (L to R) Ian Dent, Alan Locke, Peter Ford, and Mavis Ratcliffe fuelling the fire.
In this damp weather we often have difficulty in getting the fire going, but Peter Ford did such a valiant job today, (using only one match), that I am recommending him for his Firelighter's Badge. Two higher qualifications are possible, one being Firelighter Grade 1 (where you have to ignite a piece of wet asbestos by rubbing two sticks together) and ultimately, Advanced Arsonist.

Flint and steel or twisting a stick? Well done gang on a damp morning with a nasty breeze.

I have to confess it took 3 matches - with the first one the ignition head detached from the stick and the second one just went out. There was not much breeze at 9am at the fire site although it did get up later. It is noticeable that there are 3 people in Les' photo working and one "supervising".
