Cycling in France November 2009

Here are three pics of the pretty bastide village of Eymet in the Dordogne. Bastides are fortified villages dating from the Middle Ages and are characterized by a central square surrounded by arcades. Eymet is one of the best preserved. Some owed allegiance to the French throne, some to the English, and there were often skirmishes between their inhabitants. Eymet was French but in recent years has become almost English - at the last count, about 30% of Eymet's population consists of ethnic Brits! And there is a bar/restaurant/cybercafé run by an Englishman, in one of the arcades. I cycled from Issigeac to Eymet today in the dry. When I left there, it rained for the rest of the afternoon. Max temperature about 10 degrees C, grey and wet. Yet another thing to remind me of England! That's my Raleigh SUB in the bottom pic. Shame about all the cars!
