Churnet Valley Trail

The old railway line from Denstone to Oakamoor (once part of a 19th century route from Manchester to London) is now part of NCN route 54, locally known as the Churnet Valley Trail. On its way it passes the remains of the station at Alton, the location of Alton Towers. An organisation called Moorland and City Railways Ltd has bought the line from Leekbrook Jct (near Leek) to Leek and to Cauldon Low and is intending to buy a lease of the freight line from Leekbrook Jct to Stoke on Trent. One of their proposals is to extend the current Churnet Valley Railway from Oakamoor on to Alton for use of visitors to Alton Towers. Needless to say this has the backing of all the local authorities round there and, of course, the CVR. We may just lose a bit of the Churnet Valley Trail unless a way can be found to incorporate both railway and path. I will continue to watch the railway press.

Thanks for the info - this is bad news as it is yet another green project going into reverse. Why not make it part of Alton towers and charge for the hire of bikes? It would even be possible to cover the entire length in large plastic hoops, now there's a thought.

Please keep us posted and thanks.

In September 2007 I visited friends near Winkhill. They live in what was a farm, about a mile form Cauldon, and to access their property they have to go under a bridge carrying this line. I have put a photo under 'Photos'. This was taken from the Winkhill to Foxt road, where the line goes under a bridge at a cross roads.
