A Visit to the Roundhouse

Our shortest Rangers Ride to date took us about half a mile from Exeter Bridge to the newly restored Roundhouse, alongside Derby Railway Station, which was originally a repair facility for steam locomotives, and will now be part of the Derby University and Derby College campus.
Being a listed building, the Roundhouse was restored under the guidance of English Heritage and the previously derelict building is now a fine blend of old and new.
Under this agreement the building must be accessible to the public, which is good news because it contains nice restaurant.
The photograph above shows what an amazing engineering structure supports the roof.
Today's guided tour took us into some of the new classrooms and workshops where no expense has been spared in fitting them out. We were suprised to see, in the photography rooms that students are using basic photo printing techniques with liquid developer, fixer etc, so it is not all digital after all.
This lot cost the taxpayer £42m so it's nice to see what happens to our money.
On completion of this comprehensive tour, we cycled to Breadsall, riding R672 as far as the A608 bridge where a gate is now installed and returning to the Windmill PH for lunch. We plan another visit there, as the food was quite good, but Thursday is the day to go when special offers are on the menu.
