At Last!

An essential attribute for Sustrans Rangers is patience, for the wheels of officialdom turn exceedingly slowly, be it Councils, Developers or even Sustrans itself.
So it is with the new Route 54 path at Hilton, being built by the housing developers as a 106 project. After years of waiting we see something happening at last.
The path runs between the Hilton Business Park and Don Amott's Leisure Kingdom, cutting out much of the existing A5132 road route and several busy junctions, as the NCN Route wends it's way to Uttoxeter. Neither end of the path is as yet complete, but a straight 3m wide path now requires only fencing and a top surface.
At the Egginton Junction Bridge end (see lower photograph) an existing tarmac road, (currently blocked) leads to the new path (upper photograph)which can be seen through the wire barrier.
The Hilton end of the path will emerge onto the highway linking with the road (The Mease) to Marston-on-Dove, and with an existing track which leads into the Hilton village centre.
When this new path is officially open it will be necessary for us to remove the NCN R54 signs from the A5132 route.
Some highway work is being planned to improve the short distance from Egginton Junction Bridge to the new path at it's eastern end.
We will, no doubt, have to exercise patience again here as this is unlikely to be a quick job.

Can we try for a renumbering at the same time?

This is excellent news and will be most beneficial enabling us to cut out the busy Hilton village and continue on the very flat and enjoyable and well signed route to Uttoxeter as Phil, Joyce and I did last week.

An excellent idea to re-number the route at the time, but the decision will remain with Sustrans.
A unique three digit number would be much better than
"R54" which currently goes in all directions.
