Elm Wood

Elm Wood is well worth a visit if you are anywhere near Moorways Sports Centre - just at the side of the running track, backing on to Rolls Royce. It is a small area of ancient woodland (there before 1600) although it may later have been part of ornamental gardens for Osmaston House. It is now a useful resource for local schools. Nobody is certain about the name. Most of the elms were taken by Dutch Elm disease, although a few have survived. Some people from Royce's called it Jackson's Wood; someone else Red Wood. Anyone else know better?

Their oldest oak trees are about 200 years old and, like us, they suffer from a surplus of ash saplings - which they may ring-bark; something we could try. Indigenous wild flowers are also being encouraged.

I intended to attend this event, but it clashed with our walk day. It does not seem to be 60 years since the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act was brought in. Giant strides since then.
