Veteran Oak at Mickleover
Thanks to those who laboured so hard on the two work days last week, cutting back the trees which were blocking the view of this magnificant oak tree situated on Rabourne Estate land adjacent to Route 54 at Mickleover.
There is still some work to be done in tidying up the debris, but the tree is now visible and several passers-by have remarked on it, not having noticed the tree previously.
Today I measured it's girth, which (rather like in humans) is an indicator of it's age.
The girth is 4.5m which equates to an age of about 300 years.
So I'm not the oldest living thing along the cycle path after all.
The large branch marked X has been broken off during a storm and lies on the ground to the left. It has come from the top of the tree at Y.

A most impressive photograph and well worth the effort of 'unveiling' this magnificent tree.
