Deer Rutting Ride

I met Peter Ford and Martin Aldred on Exeter Bridge at 9.30am today for the Rangers Ride to Calke Abbey to see the deer rutting. Maybe the deer hadn't been informed as there was no sign of rutting - they were just eating the grass.
However, in spite of the blustery weather and a few heavy showers which fortunately came when we were close to shelter, we had an invigorating ride on R6 via Melbourne (stop for tea and cake), Staunton Harold (stop for lunch), and Willington (stop for more tea).
Whilst in Calke Park we took a look at the veteran trees, notably "The Old Man of Calke", (pictured above) an oak tree reputed to be 1200 years old. When this was a sapling the Vikings had just arrived by longboat up the River Trent to do a spot of raping and pillaging, activities which remain popular to this very day in slightly modified form.
