Busted Bridge

The Trent and Mersey Canal is closed to boats as a result of a farmers runaway six ton trailer smashing the bridge, which is on the Findern side of Stenson Lock.
The towpath remains open for cycles, since there was already a bypass route avoiding the path under the bridge.
The missing parapet now lies as hardcore at the bottom of the canal and my guess is that the bridge will have to be demolished. Fortunately the bridge carried only a farm track over the canal.

It might only be a farmer bridge but it is apparently listed so demolition would be the last resort.

Agreed, but to repair the bridge would be extremely difficult, and would no doubt involve closing the canal for a very long time.
Demolition would be relatively quick, as would replacing the bridge with a modern design.
However, no doubt BW will be under pressure from Enlish Heritage to reinstate the bridge.
A difficult decision for someone.
