The Great Northern Railway
Two of our major local NCN Routes follow the line of the Great Northern Railway, which ran through Derby either side of Friargate Station. On the western side the railway ran through Mickleover, Etwall and Egginton, now our NCN Route 54, and on the eastern side via Breadsall to Ilkeston, now our soon-to-be Route 66.
If you would like to read the fascinating history of the railway, there is an excellent book on the subject which is now out of print but available in local libraries.
It is "The Friargate Line" by Mark Higginson
It contains some lovely old photographs and detailed drawings of the rail layout in various places.
The ISBN number is 0 9513834 0 X
