Connecting Derby

Tomorrow (Wednesday) sees the completion and opening of the final section of Derby's Inner Ring Road.  It has cost (us) £36.2m and was first mooted no less than 50 years ago.  Work started in April 2009 and has inevitably resulted in long drawn out traffic delays since then.  It has, we believe, good cycling facilities
Be among the first cyclists to complete a ride of the circuit
The final section, Mercian Way, joins Uttoxeter Road to Normanton and is named after the Mercian Regiment, not Mercian Cycles.  However, if you have a Mercian bike, please come on it.
Meet in Derby Market Place at 2pm.

First rode into Derby 50 years ago on a fixed wheel bike during a weekend tour of the East Midlands from Crewe. Remember being impressed by the long decent down Burton Road; but it was all too much for one of my cotter pins, which snapped. Went into a cycle shop and was allowed to use their workshop to file and fit a new cotter.

Brings back memories Martin. As a club cyclist(East Mids Clarion) we often passed through Derby along London Road. Two way in those days right through the town (not yet a city) with a stop off place at The Spot where there used to be a milk bar. We used this route through Derby to access Youth Hostels in various parts of Derbyshire. Ilam, Bretton, Elton, Matlock etc. We also had fixed wheel, which was the norm then. c 1949.
