Bird News

After success with the introduction of osprey nesting sites at Rutland Water, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust are hoping to attract these birds to the Trent Valley. Nesting poles are to be erected at Shardlow, Swarkestone and Willington consisting of two telegraph poles fairly close together, one being a nest site and the other a perch.
It is necessary to apply for planning permission to do this and the process is already in motion.
So perhaps next year we will see these magnificent birds swooping low over the River Trent to snatch a fish from the water.
For many years ospreys have been nesting at Loch Garton in Scotland, and the RSPB visitor centre there has become a very popular tourist attraction.  Sadly it is necessary to have a 24 hour guard on the nests during the breeding season.

In Canada, on the railway alongside the Fraser River, almost every other telegraph pole is surmounted by an osprey nest.
