British Waterways

As of today 2nd July British Waterways is no more, becoming the Canal and River Trust.
Although here in South Derbyshire we have only a short section of canal towpath which is also a part of the National Cycle Network, that being Route 6 alongside the Trent and Mersey Canal between Swarkestone Lock and Weston-on-Trent, there is great potential for having many more links between Sustrans and the new oganisation.
A good link on the ground would be to continue R6 from Weston to the new Longhorse Bridge over the River Trent at Shardlow. This towpath is quite rideable in the summer months but not so good in the winter.

For full details of the Trust see the new web site.

Does this mean I need a new towpath cycle permit?

No, towpath cycling permits are now a thing of the past.
Instead, cyclists are asked to read the Green Code, which asks that they keep speed down and give way to pedestrians, particularly under low bridges.

The new Trust have obviously accepted that most towpath
cyclists did not have a permit and probably had never known
such existed!
