The Next Big Event

After the excitement of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, and before Festivol and the Olympics, the next big event in the UK is the Derby Rangers Biking Barbecue on Sunday 8th July 2012.
After last year's event being held on the wettest day of 2011, we hope for a better day this time and a record attendance.
In 2009, with good weather we had 128 people out on their bikes and apart from them all having a good time, we made a healthy profit from the sale of food and drink.
Although the management of the Etwall Leisure Centre has changed, we have agreement for the use of the adjacent sports field and free swimming for all cyclists. Not compulsory though, and you can have a ticket to swim at some other time.
Since the route from Mickleover to Etwall is almost entirely off road and flat, we are aiming our publicity at cycling families as well as those who do not like riding on the public highway, so we are promoting the event as a "Family Bike Ride with BBQ and Free Swimming".
On the field we are expanding our usual publicity gazebo to include what can be described as a "Charity Sale", this to include bike bits and complete bikes which have been donated. The charity is of course, Sustrans. Please let us know if you have items to donate for this worthy cause. We can collect if required.
The start time is moved 1/2 hour earlier, now at 10.30am, to ensure that swimmers get adequate time in the water before the general public are admitted at 1pm. This will ensure that swimming cyclists work up a good appetite and buy lots of burgers.
There is plenty of free car parking space at the start. Drive past the Stationmaster's House, through the gate, and park on the right past the flagpole.
Cyclists riding from Derby City Centre or from Derby Railway Station should follow NCN 54/68 via Mackworth to join the main ride at Mickleover.
We still need more marshals so please let us know if you can assist, and please come along and bring all your friends. Apart from the cost of food and drink, where else would you get such a good day out?
Also we have a vacancy for a cashier to collect the money.

Some of the burgers at Etwall.

Hi Les hope you are well now. I can help by marshalling on the day and I think I have a few bits of cycle jumble such as trainer, panniers, helmets. I will give you a call in next few days and also to check on festival of leisure arrangements
