Some Statistics

By eye, it is very difficult to quantify the increase in cycling activity on local cycle paths over a number of years, but there are counters on some of our routes, although we seldom see results from them. Also, the figures do not mean a lot until you can see results over a period of some years.
However, we do now have some figures from a counter on NCN Route 6 in the Pride Park area which give more accurate indications. This is a good route to monitor since it carries a large number of both commuters and recreational cyclists.
Total cycle journeys in 1998 were 90,033 and they have increased steadily to a figure of 131,065 in 2009 and 145,351 over the first 10 months of 2010. Presumably cycle journeys over the last few weeks will be well down due to the extremes of the winter weather, but the yearly totals contiune to rise.
So, quite encouraging for the various agencies who have put in so much effort and money into the promotion of cycling.

And now the powers that be are concerned because one in six of us - presumably the cyclists - will live to be over 100 years of age. That's another twentyfive years of Christmas lunches.
