The Community Payback Team returned to R54 today to carry on with the ground clearance work in the area around Sutton Lane Bridge.
As well as removing more surplus trees from the stretch between Sutton Lane and the Pink Bridge, they did some valuable work in exposing more of the brick parapets of the stream which flows beneath the embankment, and removed three tree trunks which were partly blocking the water flow.
Not only has this changed the appearance of the area, but the stream is now flowing more swiftly, carrying away trapped debris, and the water was starting to clear before we left. See lower photograph.
The road beneath Heage Lane Bridge remains flooded (see upper photograph) and the road is officially closed to traffic, although some high vehicles are getting through. Several car engines have been drowned here recently.
Fortunately for us, R54 is carried across the bridge and is unaffected. The path at Egginton Junction Bridge has been flooded for some time.
The Payback Team will be coming again next Wednesday and for the first time entering at Old Station Close, as the cleared section moves ever nearer to the A50 Tunnel.
All this work has resulted in a large pile of debris near to Sutton Lane Bridge and since this would take years to rot down, we are proposing to set light to it on our Workday, Saturday next 30th January anytime after 9am.
Please come along if you can. We need plenty of stokers.
LATE NEWS RE FLOODING (Thursday 28th January)
This morning a DCC tanker lorry was used to pump out the flood water from beneath Heage Lane Bridge. The drain which was blocked with mud was cleaned out, and the road re-opened.
