Red Wheels in Derbyshire

Knowing the interests of some of the Derby Rangers, here is something which might interest a number of you.
The Transport Trust (
www.transporttrust.com) is a national charity which, for more than 40 years, has been successfully promoting the preservation of Britain’s heritage in all modes of transport – on land, by water and in the air. The Trust is administering the erection of special plaques, colloquially known as ‘Red Wheels’, launched by the organization ‘Our Transport Heritage’ (OTH) (www.transportheritage.com) commemorating Britain’s rich and globally important legacy in the development of transport and presenting it to a new and wider audience. Some OTH candidates e.g. the Forth Bridge and Channel Tunnel, are household names but many more are currently little known and their importance unappreciated.
The next couple of weeks will see the unveiling of the first of these Red Wheels – and within our own area!
The first will be at Barrow Hill Roundhouse on Fri 3 April at 12:00, during a visit by TT members. This day is a private photographers' preview day of the weekend's Barrow Hill Gala - with Tornado et al. TT members are being allowed in at half price (£25).
The following Tues, 7 April, Sir Bill McAlpine, who is President of the TT, will unveil a 'Red Wheel' to the Ticknall Tramway at 11:00. [Park in the Village Hall car park. The ceremony will be adjacent to the Ticknall Arch, over the A514] That will be followed by a walk through the Tramway Tunnel - one of the oldest in the world - and coffee at Calke Abbey.
Next, the party will move on to Shardlow, via the 13th Century Swarkestone Causeway. At Shardlow Heritage Centre (adjacent to the Clock Warehouse / Marston's pub) Sir Bill will unveil another 'Red Wheel' to Shardlow Canal Port, after which there will be more refreshments and a conducted tour of the village. There is no cost for either of these last two events, except for lunch.

Wonder whether they will have to pay their £1.50 to walk under Calke Park through the Tramway Tunnel
